A blend of peat, cottonsedge (Eriophorum) and wood shavings is the most popular and widely-used litter product.
Peat has the advantages of excellent moisture absorption, good absorption of ammonia odour and a low pH that prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi. Wood shavings absorb liquids and urine, are dust-free and prevent peat from compressing. The blend of wood shavings and peat highlights the benefits of both materials.
A blend of wood shavings, shredded fibre and peat absorbs up to 7 kg of moisture per kg of litter.
For comparison: wood shavings absorb 1.45 kg per kg of material; sawdust (40% moisture content) – 1.52 kg per kg; whole straw (20% moisture content) – 2.0 kg per kg; chopped straw (20% moisture content) – 3.0 kg per kg. As a result, birds grow up healthier, their feet do not get cracked from being covered with debris and they suffer less from respiratory diseases;
The substances in the blend and the lower pH (around 4-4.8) inhibit the development of fungi and rotting bacteria, so that a bird’s organism is better protected against rot and harmful micro-organisms, especially aspergillosis;
The blend of wood shavings, cottonsedge and peat is much more versatile and practical than many other litter products due to its multifunctional structure. The peat and shredded fibre materials are mixed with the shavings, so there are no litter piles or empty space – the bedding is level.
This litter blend does not contain hazardous substances, micro-organisms or fungi that can harm animals or humans. It is also free of GMOs, weed seeds, nematodes and other harmful agents.
